Embark on a unique and unforgettable experience in the heart of Los Glaciares National Park.
The Big Ice is a full-day excursion that begins with passenger pick-up in El Calafate (if you select the option with transfers). In our comfortable buses, en route to Los Glaciares National Park, tour guides will provide information about the activity, the area, and the glacier.
Once at the "Bajo de las Sombras" port (Route 11, 70 km from El Calafate), you will board a boat to cross Lake Rico, reaching the opposite shore after approximately 20 minutes of sailing in front of the imposing southern face of the Perito Moreno Glacier.
Upon arrival at the refuge, the group will be met by expert mountain guides, who will divide you into subgroups and accompany you throughout the trek. The trek begins with an approximately 2-hour hike along the moraine, where you can enjoy various panoramic views of the glacier and the surrounding forest.
The Big Ice excursion is a highly personalized experience: groups on the ice will be limited to 10 people, accompanied by two mountain guides who will fit you with crampons, helmets, and harnesses, and explain the basic safety rules.
The physical demands are high both in the forest and on the ice, where the surface is uneven but firm and safe.
Once on the glacier and with your crampons on, the world takes on a new perspective: blue lagoons, deep crevasses, enormous sinkholes, magical caves, and the unique sensation of being in the heart of the glacier.
For approximately three hours, you will explore the hidden corners of the world's most special glacier. During the tour, the mountain guides will help you learn more about the ice and its surroundings, allowing you to appreciate the glacier's magnitude and enjoy the views of the surrounding mountains, such as Dos Picos, Pietrobelli, and Cervantes. You will also have half an hour for lunch and to marvel at this place of unparalleled beauty.
At the end of the glacier hike, you'll begin your return journey along the same path back to the Refuge, where you'll have a few minutes to contemplate this place of unparalleled beauty. Upon boarding the boat for the return trip, you'll sail very close to the southern face of the Perito Moreno Glacier before returning to "civilization"—after having enjoyed one of the most spectacular ice treks in the world!
The excursion, including transportation, lasts approximately twelve hours and includes a one-hour guided visit to the Perito Moreno Glacier walkways, located 7 km from the port. There, you can enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of the glacier and explore one of the self-guided trails. If you choose not to use our transportation and go on your own, the Big Ice trek lasts approximately seven and a half hours, departing from the port and returning to the same starting point.
The Big Ice trek takes place in a natural environment, so weather conditions and the characteristics of the glacier and its surroundings change daily. However, the excursion will not be cancelled as long as safety conditions allow. We look forward to seeing you!
