The day begins with an independent departure from Kyoto Station to Kanazawa, kicking off a journey full of culture, history, and breathtaking landscapes. The first stop is the picturesque village of Shirakawago, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This charming destination is famous for its traditional gassho-zukuri houses, with steep thatched roofs shaped like praying hands, designed to withstand heavy snowfall. Upon arrival, visitors can enjoy lunch on their own and stroll through the tranquil streets, admiring the historic architecture, artisan workshops, and the serene atmosphere that feels frozen in time.
Next, the journey continues to Kenrokuen, considered one of Japan’s most beautiful gardens and a true oasis of art and nature. Its ponds reflecting trees and flowers, elegant bridges, stone lanterns, and carefully designed pathways MAKE an atmosphere of harmony and tranquility, offering a unique experience in any season.
Later, the itinerary heads to the historic district of Higashi Chaya, where you can stroll along cobblestone streets lined with traditional teahouses that retain the charm of the Edo period. You can also explore art galleries and local craft workshops, immersing yourself in the area’s rich cultural heritage. The district is also renowned for its geishas, who keep the traditional arts alive in some of the historic teahouses.
The day concludes with a return to Kanazawa Station to board the train back to Kyoto, after a full day of discoveries that combines dreamlike landscapes, living history, and the cultural essence of the Hokuriku region.
