Enjoy a guided tour of the Royal Monastery of El Escorial, an architectural complex declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Built in the 15th century, it is a symbol of the power of the government at that time. Learn all the details of the Royal Mausoleum it contains and the history behind the 21 years it took to build. In the Renaissance style, the symmetry of the building will amaze you. Listen to your guide's explanations as you walk around the site, visiting the Habsburg Palace, the Chapter House, the Basilica, and the extraordinary library.
Board the bus again for a short journey to the next destination, the Valley of the Fallen. The site is located 9 km from El Escorial, in the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains. You will be able to see it from afar thanks to the monumental cross erected on the site. The monument is an underground basilica built into the mountain. It is crowned by the largest cross in the world, visible for miles around.
In the afternoon:
Check in at our office in the center of Madrid fifteen minutes before your tour departs and head to Toledo with your local guide. Follow your guide on a walking tour of the historic city of Toledo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986. Once the capital of Spain, it is a spectacular blend of Arab, Jewish, and Christian cultures.
Explore its fantastic heritage and discover how the coexistence of cultures throughout the centuries influenced its current architectural style. Admire the building commissioned by Queen Isabella of Castile to become a royal mausoleum, the most important construction built by the Catholic Monarchs: the Monastery of San Juan de los Reyes.
Walk through Toledo's cobbled streets until you reach the Cathedral. Built on the remains of an old Arab mosque, this cathedral was erected during the 13th century and is now one of the most important Gothic cathedrals in Spain.
